Dundee Custom House to be turned into five-star hotel

This will entail construction of a modest new build extension to the existing building clad in narrow, grey, horizontal timber strips.
Important internal features of the listed buildings will also be retained; notably the first floor boardroom which retains fine oak paneling and an ornate fireplace with the crest of the Port Authority carved upon it.
It is a busy time for the city’s hotel sector with two more hotels planned nearby; the Malmaison and Railway Station Hotel. Together these projects are valued at £30m and will double capacity at Dundee Waterfront to well over 500 rooms.
Mike Galloway, Dundee city development director, said: “The new hotels are well timed in advance of a variety of major tourism and infrastructure developments in the city, the largest of which is the new V&A at Dundee, on which work will start later this year”.

Tremendous news. Is Dundee the only Scottish city heading in the right direction? Kudos to the council who, in comparison to Edinburgh, glasgow and Aberdeen, appear to be a well run and moderately ambitious unit.

I think Dundee is attracting investment for two main reasons - historic underinvestment has left gaps in the market waiting to be filled and the waterfront masterplan is opening up major new development opportunities close to the city centre. Well done to them anyway. It is refreshing to see a local authority with the vision to deliver a truly impressive new HQ and a radical overhaul of the waterfront in challenging times.

It ought also to be mentioned that there are efforts afoot to establish the Dundee Transport Museum. An amateur affair, but worthy of not and will, at very least, offer an additional interesting destination within the city. If realised.
